Some Mid-Week Comments

Please add these folks to your prayers this week ...

re:  ROB GRILL:
Kent ...
Someone on Ron Smith's Oldies Bulletin Board is reporting that Rob Grill has been hospitalized in critical condition.
Frank B.
Here is a copy of that posting in question:

I found this posted on another board -
This came in from my friend Michael Lloyd:
Just got a call ... My dear friend Rob Grill - leader of The Grass Roots (legendary band) - is in need of sustained prayer tonight. He's in the hospital in critical condition. May God bless my friend.  If you can, please share this.
Ol Rocker

Hey Kent
I can't find anything on the net,but a friend told me today he had heard that Rob passed away?  He had been fighting some form of cancer. This could be why he has been absent from the shows and all.
Mickey
Over the past several days, we have received numerous reports about Rob Grill's failing health ... as of publication time this morning, we didn't see any official reports of his passing.  Without question, Rob has had his share of medical problems these past few years ... and some serious mental anguish as well after the loss of his son last year.  We wish him well.  (The Grass Roots are part of The Happy Together Again Tour line-up this year ... but WITHOUT Grill ... leaving NO original members onboard!)  kk

re:  GLEN CAMPBELL:
How sad ... imagine having THOSE kinds of memories ... and then losing them.  Campbell has had an incredible career ... an incredible life.  Glad to see he's planning his exit ... would love to see him go out on top.  (kk)
Glen Campbell revealed Wednesday (June 22) why he will be retiring after his next album in August and a series of farewell concerts this fall-- the 75 year-old was diagnosed six months ago with Alzheimer’s Disease. Said Glen, “I still love making music. And I still love performing for my fans. I'd like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin.”

re:  SUMMER FAVORITES:
Good response again this year to our All-Time Top Summer Favorites ... great to see so many jocks on the list program this into their shows this year!  And we're still getting a few comments on this ...
YOU ARE ALL OVER THE TRUE OLDIES CHANNEL TODAY, COAST TO COAST ... A REPLAY WILL AIR TONITE!!!  RESPONSE HAS BEEN THRU THE ROOF!
SCOTT SHANNON
EXCELLENT!!!  Scott even put a blurb up on The True Oldies Channel website!  (kk)
It looks like this special broadcast brought about 1250 first time visitors to The Forgotten Hits Website ... so again we say "Thank You" for helping us to spread the word.  (kk)

Wonderful to see a 'A Summer Song' in the top three All-Time Summer Favorites - and I was on it!
Vic Flick

Hey Kent ...
The show was a lot of fun and again, my listeners loved it! It's always such a good time ... my favorite part of summer!

Thanks again for the web site and all that you do to keep those gone but not forgotten hits alive!
Moochas smoochas....
DJ Scarlett Hayze
Revolution Radio
I got a chance to listen to a little bit of it on Monday Night ... LOTS of "extras" on your show, too!  Thanks for helping us to spread the word!  (kk)

I read your list of the top 100 (AMAZING) summer songs and am tuned in to SCOTT SHANNON'S TRUE OLDIES CHANNEL right this minute.  I can't listen during the day so I am very thankful he's playing it again!!!!!!  Love me some True Oldies!
Nancy Kitchens / Atlanta

I listened to Scott Shannon play the countdown TWICE on Tuesday -- what a great way to celebrate the first day of summer.  (Did you notice how he slipped in his own version of "Here Comes Summer" as an extra?  LOVED it!)
Danny
Yeah, I told Scott that was one of the highlights for me, too!  The Wildfire version went to #43 in Cash Box Magazine in 1977 ... we've featured it here before, too!  (kk)

Another one that I thought sounded especially good was the MONSTER Percy Faith #1 Hit "Theme From 'A Summer Place'".  Not only did that record place at #6 on your All-Time Favorite Songs Of Summer List ... but it ALSO came in at #2 on your All-Time Favorite Instrumentals List, too!  (kk)

My favorite Summer hit comes by way of Ronnie Dove with his record Happy Summer Days.
Tom Diehl

Kent,
How ya been, pal? Would you  rank "Live for the Sun" by the Sunrays, Murray Wilson's group, in the top 100?  I recall when the song came out i just loved it.  It was a solid rocker that also seemed to have a haunting feeling that the summers of our youth couldn't last forever.
the best,
chet coppock

Yep, that's a great one ... and it received enough votes to place at #44 (just shy of the Top 40 Countdown a few of the jocks covered ... but it makes for a GREAT "extra", too!)  I enjoyed "I Live For The Sun" AND "Andrea" by The Sunrays, both of which did pretty well here in Chicago.  (#28 and #12 respectively, besting their national showings of #45 and #41!)  I'm cool with featuring this one again today!  (kk)

re:  FREDDY CANNON:

TOP TEN THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT FREDDY ‘BOOM BOOM’ CANNON:
1.  He holds the record for the number of appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand - 110
2. Paul McCartney currently owns the copyright for 'Palisades Park.'
3. He opened for the Rolling Stones once … in 1965; with Herman's Hermits and Little Anthony & The Imperials.
4. 'Palisades Park' is featured in the current Top Ten movie X MEN: FIRST CLASS … which has grossed $98 million … so far worldwide.
5. He is currently writing his biography with celebrity-author Mark Bego, tentatively titled 'Where The Action Is.'
6. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin told Freddy that he considered Cannon one of his prime influences for wanting to get into the music business.
7.  Elvis Presley once climbed 17 floors up the fire escape of The Peabody Hotel in Memphis to hang out with Freddy Cannon, Frankie Avalon, and Fabian after a concert.
8.  Freddy is one of the stars of the 1965 cult horror film "Valley of the Giants" along with Ron Howard, Beau Bridges, and Tommy Kirk.
9.  Horror-meister Stephen King is a HUGE fan of Freddy's.
10.  Bruce Springsteen is such a fan of Freddy's, that he opened his 1987 "Tunnel of Love" tour with Cannon's huge hit song "Palisades Park."

HI KENT,
YOU KNOW BEING ONE OF MAYBE FIVE OR SIX ARTISTS WHO OWN THEIR OWN MASTERS, THIS IS A BLESSING!  SO WHEN PALASADES PARK IS NOW IN XMEN FIRST CLASS, ONE OF THE BIGGEST BLOCK BUSTERS THIS YEAR, I FEEL GREAT!
LET'S ROCK, KENT!
THANKS!
FREDDY "BOOM BOOM" CANNON
re:  MORE MOVIE MUSIC:
This past weekend we saw what is sure to be this week's new blockbuster hit, "The Green Lantern" ... and were pleased to see our FH Buddies The Fleetwoods' big #1 Hit "Come Softly To Me" prominently featured in one key scene.  After running blurbs about Freddy Cannon's and Alan O'Day's recent movie music placement, it's GREAT to see SO many of our favorite artists still getting soundtrack recognition after all these years ... proving AGAIN that this music is TIMELESS!!!  (kk)
Kent ...
Of course we're used to hearing our favorite Oldies on the radio.
You mentioned these two movies:  "Super 8" featuring "Undercover Angel" by Alan O' Day  and
"X-Men" featuring Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon singing "Palisades Park".
Maybe it's better to have your song in a popular movie than to have it played on the radio.
One of my favorite movies, "Goodfellas", is on here in New York at least once a week. I get to hear "Life Is But A Dream", "Roses Are Red" plus all of the rest of those great songs over
and over every time I watch the movie.
I guess you would have to have a radio hit first, before anyone would consider putting your song in a movie. Am I making any sense?
Frank B.
Rarely ... but we still love ya anyway!  (lol)  Just kidding ... getting your song placed in a major hit movie is a VERY big deal ... tons of royalty, recognition and renewed radio airplay ... which is REALLY amazing because not all these songs GET regular oldies airplay anymore.  I told Gretchen Christopher and Gary Troxel about their #1 Hit being used in "Green Lantern" and they were THRILLED!  (And now a whole new generation will discover this song, too!) kk
re:  MRS. BROWN, YOU'VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER / HOLD ON / HERMAN'S HERMITS:

>>>Herman's Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter - 1965
Here we hear Peter Herman (Noone) doing some studio talk, trying to find the right tempo!!! Good job, ABKCO!  Let's keep the ball rollin'!

(Jersey John)
>>>Great clip, John ... shows you how things are worked out and put together in the studio!  (kk)
Perhaps your buddy Jersey John could actually be so nice as to let people know WHERE they can find this version?!?!? It is on this cd:
which also includes some first time stereo (or did JJ actually miss that? *gasp!*)
Tom Diehl
And, speaking of Jersey John ...

re:  TODAY'S FORGOTTEN HIT:
When collecting 45s ( @ 3 / $1.00 ) at a Jukebox dealer, decades back, I found this song. I thought it was cool! How was I to know Pete was a white guy!? A Forgotten Hit, indeed!
A bit of Doo Wop during the Disco phase!  Eighteen With A Bullet.

Best,
Jersey John
Yep, a GREAT (but LONG Forgotten) Hit from 1975 ... which is why we featured it a month back!  (lol)
I'm telling you, you've got to check the website every single day!!!  (lol)  kk
