Here's The Latest On My Of Your'60's Favorites!

re: CRUISIN' WITH PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS:
For the 20th year in a row, Paul Revere and the Raiders are headlining this year's Concerts At Sea program. It's a week-long cruise (running from January 20 - January 27, 2013) that takes you through Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Princess Cays, Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, U.S.Virgin Islands and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos.
And what a line up they've got this year. In addition to seeing Paul Revere and the Raiders (who put on, hands down, one of the best shows you'll EVER see), you'll also be entertained by Chubby Checker, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels!
Full details are available here: Click here: Concerts At Sea (along with videos by all of the headlining acts, talking up the trip.)
I've never been on a cruise ... but this one sounds like about as much fun as you can have on one! (Could you imagine rounding up 50 of our Forgotten Hits Readers and doing a cruise like this together??? My God, we could turn this into the Concerts At Sea / Where The Action Is / Paul Revere and the Raiders / Forgotten Hits Cruise literally overnight!!! lol)
Hey, maybe it's not as far-fetched an idea as it sounds! We'd LOVE to do it ... in fact, if you ARE so inclined to book this trip, please be sure to mention that you read about it here in Forgotten Hits ... if enough people get onboard, we just might be able to pull something like this off!
Here's Paul Revere to tell you all about it ...

Speaking of Paul Revere and the Raiders, they've got a show coming up later this month at The Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, IN. Last time they played there, they sold the place out ... so again, please book early. You're not going to have this much fun at a concert anywhere else.
Dates are also lined up on August 23rd (at the Oak Lawn Racetrack in Hot Springs, AR) as well as at The Toronto Star Bandshell on August 30th, sharing the bill with Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits! (Man, what a show THAT'LL be!!!)
More details on the Paul Revere and the Raiders website: Click here: Paul Revere & the Raiders

Rumor has it that the guys will be leaving their home base of Branson, Missouri, a little more often in 2013, putting together more tours and appearances ... hitting the road to bring the show to you this time.

And, of course, you can always expect to find the latest news (and ALL of the complete details) right here in Forgotten Hits as they develop ... so stay tuned! (kk)

re: OTHER RECENT AND UP-COMING SHOWS AND EVENTS:
One more reminder: This Saturday Night Jimy Sohns gets to celebrate "66" for the second time.
Of course the FIRST time was back in 1966, when Jimy's group The Shadows Of Knight took their classic rendition of the Van Morrison song "Gloria" into The National Top Ten. How big was it? Well, it topped the charts here in Chicago, where the band called home ... and has remained so popular that even now, 46 years later, you guys voted The Shadows Of Knight as your All-Time Favorite Garage Band. (The final results of this recent poll are still coming up in Forgotten Hits ... we're hoping to completely resurrect this series over The Labor Day Holiday Weekend and post it to the site shortly thereafter.)
Meanwhile, Saturday Night Jimy gets to celebrate 66 all over again ... only this time it's his 66th birthday bash ... and what better way to celebrate than with a live concert by the 2012 version of The Shadows Of Knight!

It all takes place at The Blues Bar in Mt. Prospect, IL ... and we're expecting a pretty full house for this ... so get there early. (Rumors of some surprise on-stage birthday guests continue to circulate ... some come join us in all the fun as festivities as Jimy Sohns celebrated "66" ... for the second time!

The 2012 Happy Together Again Tour blows through the Chicagoland area one more time this Friday Night with a stop at The Paramount Theatre in Aurora. What a GREAT chance to see and hear some of the biggest artists of the '60's.

This year's line up includes headliners The Turtles, Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The 'new' Grass Roots and Chicago's very own The Buckinghams. These shows are always mega-entertaining ... so don't miss it! (And then don't forget to report back with your concert review!)
There are still a few dates left to catach this killer line-up before they hang it up for another season ...

8/23/12 Cardinal Stadium (Kentucky State Fair), Louisville, KY
8/24/12 Paramount Theater, Aurora, IL
8/25/12 Ho-Chunk Casino, Black River Falls, WI
8/26/12 Corn Palace, Mitchell, SD
8/27/12 Minnesota State Fair Grandstand (Minnesota State Fair), St. Paul, MN
8/29/12 Carnegie Library Music Hall, Homestead, PA
8/30/12 New York State Fairgrounds (New York State Fair), Syracuse, NY

And, speaking of Micky Dolenz, here he is talking about the up-coming Monkees reunion tour in Rolling Stone Magazine ... along with a few comments from noted photographer Michael Bush, who has spent the past three decades photographing the pre-fab four!

I just LOVE how Rolling Stone is milking this for all it's worth to get readers over to their website ... yet they still don't consider The Monkees to be Hall Of Fame worthy. (Hey, maybe this will all change now that Davy's gone ... and how sad would THAT be ... but until it does, this whole capitalizing on the reunion tour is pretty damn hypocritical on Jann Wenner's part as far as I'm concerned.) kk

I'VE HEARD FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE UPCOMING REUNION, BUT IF IT'S DONE RIGHT I PERSONALLY HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT. AS LONG AS THERE IS A HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO DAVID IN THERE (AND I'M SURE THERE WILL BE), IT WILL BE GREAT TO SEE THE OTHER THREE MAKING ANY KIND OF MUSIC! THE MONKEES EXPERIENCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY POLITICAL ONE, AND BEING AS CLOSE TO THE SITUATION AS I WAS FOR MANY YEARS ALWAYS LEAVES ME THINKING SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING! THERE'S NO DISPUTING THAT DAVID WILL BE SORELY MISSED, SINCE HE IS WITHOUT A DOUBT IRREPLACEABLE, AND WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST SHOWMEN EVER (AND I'VE SEEN THEM ALL!)
THAT BEING SAID, MICHAEL NESMITH HAS A LOT OF MUSIC TO OFFER THAT AUDIENCES HAVE NEVER HEARD LIVE, AND THAT HAS TO BE EXCITING FOR FANS OF ANY AGE! I HOPE I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SOME OF THE SHOWS, AND IF I DO, I'LL GIVE YOU MY REVIEW AFTERWARDS ... THEN IT'S ON TO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME, CAUSE THEY CERTAINLY DESERVE IT (HOWEVER BITTERSWEET IT WOULD BE NOW)!!!
LOVE TO EVERYONE OUT THERE IN MONKEEDOM.
MICHAEL G. BUSH
I believe the shows will still be quite outstanding and moving ... and let's face it, it's not like Mike's been out on the road as a solo act for the past 45 years ... so it's great to see him participating in ANY capacity at this point. I believe the show will be VERY sentimental toward Davy's memory ... but somehow it still just won't be the same without Davy out there, front and center. (kk)

From Forgotten Hits Reader Tom Cuddy:

'Jersey Boys' Frankie Valli To Play Broadway for 1st Time
By MARK KENNEDY
NEW YORK (AP) — The Broadway smash "Jersey Boys" is about to get some tough competition — from an original Jersey Boy.
Frankie Valli, whose falsetto fuels The Four Seasons' music, on Wednesday announced plans to make his Broadway debut with seven shows at the Broadway Theatre from Oct. 19-27. The band is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
That will put him up against "Jersey Boys," the behind-the-music musical about the doo-wop group. Valli will sing many of the same songs that appear in the show at his concerts.
"I've performed around the world in every size theater imaginable, but it has always been my dream to play Broadway," Valli, 78, said in a statement. Tickets go on sale Aug. 23.
Producers of "Jersey Boys" took the news in stride. "We are thrilled that Frankie is making his Broadway debut," they said in a statement Wednesday.
The musical, which opened in 2005 at the August Wilson Theatre, tells the story of the band — Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi — and features 20 Four Seasons songs, including "Sherry," ''Big Girls Don't Cry," ''Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Oh, What a Night."
It won the Tony for best musical, a Grammy Award for best cast album and has been seen by over 13 million people across the world and grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
In 1990, Valli and The Four Seasons were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Together they scored 30 Billboard Top 40 hits, and Valli scored 9 Billboard Top 40 hits as a solo artist.

Hey Kent ...
I wanted to bring the Forgotten Hits members up to date on what's coming up for us in the next few weeks ... and months with The Rip Chords.
I've attached a couple of Posters for you to see ... for two shows in September ... one, a great show with Ron Dante, The Orlons, and many others on September 8th ... and another, headlining at the beautiful Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA, on September 28th.
There's also a big Christmas show at The Keswick Theater that we will be a part of. More info on that soon.
And, 2013 is starting to book up quite nicely, too. It looks like we'll be at The Sunrise Theater in Ft. Pierce, Florida, in another show with the great Ron Dante along with Joey Dee on Feb. 1st. ... poster for that one is coming soon. We've also been invited to the Monkees / Davy Jones Convention - Memorial Event in March, 2013, at The Meadowlands Sheraton in NJ ... just outside of NYC ... because of my participation in Pat Horgan's "Garage Band Tribute to The Monkees" CD on Collectables Records. There also a big Multi Act show in Allentown coming up in June. More info soon.
Great to see you back up and running. Thanks for all that you do for the "Good Old Rock and Roll Community"! (I like that term better than the term "Oldies" ... although I thank God for the Oldies ... the best music in the universe!)
Talk soon ...
Mitch Schecter / The Rip Chords

Happy to let our East Coast Readers know all about these shows ... and we've got quite a few readers down in Florida, too ... near as I can determine, they're second only to Chicago as far as devoted Forgotten Hits readership ... so hopefully some of them will get the chance to check out your show with Ron Dante and Joey Dee! (Now if we could just get you guys to swing through Chicago!!!) kk

THE DOORS LIVE AT THE BOWL ’68
The Band’s Historic Performance Has Been Restored From Original Camera Negatives And Remixed And Mastered Using Original Multi-Track Tapes To Create The Definitive Version - The Concert Will Be Released On DVD, Blu-Ray, And Digital Video From Eagle Rock Entertainment And CD, Digital Audio, And Double-LP From Rhino On October 23

New York, NY (August 15, 2012)– The Doors supplied plenty of post-Independence Day fireworks on July 5, 1968 when the legendary quartet played the Hollywood Bowl, a concert that is considered to be the band’s finest on film. For the first time, the film from the historic performance has been painstakingly restored using the original camera negatives and the audio has been remixed and mastered from original multi-tracks by the group’s engineer Bruce Botnick. This new restoration offers a stunning visual upgrade from earlier versions and will give fans the closest experience to being there live along side Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, who opined, “You can hear it as if you were at the Hollywood Bowl, on stage with us.”
LIVE AT THE BOWL ’68 will include three previously unreleased tracks from the performance. Technical issues with the recording of “Hello, I Love You,” “The WASP (Texas Radio And The Big Beat),” and “Spanish Caravan” prevented them from being released in the past. Now, through meticulous restoration of the audio, all three will be included, marking the first time the concert has been available in its entirety.
LIVE AT THE BOWL ’68 – the definitive version of this concert – is coming October 23 in several formats. Eagle Rock Entertainment will present the concert on Blu-Ray ($19.98), DVD ($14.98), and digital video ($12.99). Rhino will release the remixed audio for the entire concert on CD ($18.98), digital audio ($11.99) and double-LP ($34.98).
The DVD, Blu-Ray and digital video each feature a 16x9 high-definition digital transfer with both a stereo and 5.1 audio soundtrack as well as over an hour of bonus material. Included in the additional content are “Echoes From The Bowl,” The Doors’ route to the Hollywood Bowl; “You Had To Be There,” memories of The Doors’ performance at the Bowl; “Reworking The Doors,” an in-depth look at how the film was restored; and three bonus performances: “Wild Child” from The Smothers Brothers Show in 1968, “Light My Fire” from The Jonathan Winters Show in December 1967 and a version of Van Morrison’s “Gloria” with specially created visuals.
Jeff Jampol, Doors manager and producer of the film said “The Doors’ live performances were a shamanistic journey into dark rock and roll psychedelic theater – a swirling mixture of rock ‘n’ roll heat, poetry, danger, drama and unbridled musical virtuosity. Captured at the height of The Doors’ magical powers, in one of the world’s greatest venues, this brand new restoration, edit and mix, corny as it may sound, made me fall in love a hundred times, all over again.”
Geoff Kempin, executive producer for Eagle Rock said “The Doors were one of THE most incredible live bands ever – we wanted to apply the top technology so that everyone can fully appreciate the phenomenon of The Doors captured at their height on 5 July 1968”.

Hi Kent,
Just read your last Newsletter. Lots going on here, too. In fact, here's one more item that might interest you and your readers.
Next month, ACE Records (Big Beat) is issuing Bob Lind's brand-new CD, FINDING YOU AGAIN, produced by veteran rock guitarist Jamie Hoover, founding member of the Spongetones. Other things have come out over the past few years (the live CD, the concert / documentary DVD, etc.), but this is Bob's first actual new studio album in over 40 years.

As you know, ACE (Big Beat) is predominantly known as a reissue label, so this is a bold step for them. These are all new, previously unreleased recordings, of mostly brand-new songs. It's clearly a project ACE believes in wholeheartedly.
It's due out on Sept. 24.
In the next few weeks it will be available for preorder all over the WEB including Amazon.
Thought you might want to be among the first to get the news.
Here's a link that tells a little more about it:
Take Care,
Jill Guerra (Bob Lind's manager)
This is great news, Jill ... as you know, Forgotten Hits has had the pleasure of "sneak peeking" new tracks by Bob Lind several times over the past few years ... many thanks to you and Bob for always trusting us to help get the word out.
The prospect of an all new album sounds exciting ... please keep us posted ... and again, if you've got a particular track you'd like us to share, just say the word! (kk)

Kent,
After reading about some of the other “revivals” going on, I just couldn’t resist sharing how I spent part of my summer vacation.
Since I’m always looking for a chance to “show off” and play some great rock n’ roll, I recently wrote, produced, directed and played in several performances of a “BATTLE OF THE 60’S SEXES” . It challenged the Guy Groups against the Gal Groups from that era in 10 rounds of full-contact, over the top rope, no holds barred, pinfalls count anywhere songs from the 50’s and 60’s. (Actually, it was a poor man’s version of “Forever Plaid”, but it was still fun and a great show.) Here’s a pix of me with the cast in their outfits.

Sounds like a blast ... wish we could have seen this one! (kk)

So why does this current superstar Taylor Swift ... (I really know nothing about her) think she must copy the Cryan' Shames? I mean, the Shames have released THREE "red" albums. Is there a lawsuit in there somewhere?http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/20120813_ap_taylorswiftreleasingnewalbumredonoct22.html?cmpid=138887484
Clark Besch
I can only consider your gripe a bit extreme ... and you know how much I LOVE The Cryan' Shames ... but truth be told, in the musical scheme of things, on a scale of 1-10 The Cryan' Shames probably rate about a 2 ... while Taylor Swift would be about a 27 ... there haven't been many artists hotter over the past several years ... and her new song is about as catchy pop (and un-country) as anything she's released so far. I was a "late to the party" fan ... but her track record cannot be denied. Her new single (which to these ears has a bit of a Katy Perry feel to it) is absolutely destined to top the charts ... it's that good. Listen to it three times and you'll be hooked. And I'd be willing to bet the farm that if she's got a "red album" theme going, The Cryan' Shames are probably the furthest thing from her mind ... my guess is she's never even heard of them!!! Give a listen to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" three times and you'll be hooked. (kk)

re: ANOTHER LOSS:
One of my favorite records of 1967 (my favorite year in music) AND of all-time has to be the John Phillips-penned "San Francisco", a #4 Hit ... and the anthem of "The Summer of Love" ... so I was quite saddened to hear that Scott McKenzie, the guy who made that record everything it was, passed away this past weekend. This record just has a "sound" that totally captures The Summer of Love Era ... and I find it just as haunting today as I did when I first heard it 45 years ago. I was fortunate enough to see Scott McKenzie perform as part of The Mamas and the Papas twice ... and this song was always one of the highlights of those performances. (While I knew that he cowrote The Beach Boys' #1 Hit "Kokomo" ... and that Mamas and Papas Producer Lou Adler was none to happy with Papa John giving away a sure-fire hit (who even dreamed at the time that it would have the staying power that it has), I did NOT know that he took his stage name from John Phillips' daughter MacKenzie Phillip, teenage star of "American Graffiti" and television's "One Day At A Time". (kk)
Scott McKenzie, best known for the "Summer of Love" anthem, "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)," died Saurday (August 18) in Los Angeles at the age of 73. Scott had been hospitalized with stomach pains until just the day before but the seriousness of his illness was not made public. Born Phil Blondheim in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1939, his family moved shortly thereafter to North Carolina and later, Virginia. It was there that he became friends with John Phillips (who would later form the Mamas & the Papas). John and Phil sang together in a band called the Smoothies (nee the Abstracts) and got a recording contract with Decca Records. It was then that Phil changed his name, "borrowing" John's daughter's middle name (albeit with a different spelling) as his new last name. In 1961, John and Scott sang together (with Dick Weissman) in the well-received folk trio, the Journeymen, who recorded for Capitol Records. As the folk boom ended, John went on to form the Mamas & the Papas and Scott signed with Ode Records as a solo artist. John gave him a song he had written as the unofficial anthem for 1967's Monterey Pop Festival (of which Papa John was an organizer) and "San Francisco" became a #4 hit. Another Phillips-penned tune, "Like An Old Time Movie," reached #24 later that fall, but Scott would never see the Hot 100 again. He stopped recording altogether in the early '70s but was enticed to join a re-formed version of the Mamas & the Papas with John, Spanky McFarlane and his "namesake," Mackenzie Phillips, in 1986. Along with John, Mike Love and producer Terry Melcher, he co-wrote the Beach Boys' #1 hit, "Kokomo," in 1988. In
2010, he was hospitalized with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a nervous system disorder that may have contributed to his death. When his niece broke the news of Scott's passing on his Facebook page (where he was very active and entertaining), she said, "the best part about it all was bringing all the people together who not only loved him but loved each other and supported each other. He said he couldn't ask for any greater gift than that."
-- Ron Smith

And, speaking of The Summer Of Love, an official website commemorating The Monterey Pop Music Festival (of which John Phillips was one of the organizers) is ALSO up and running ... you can check it out here:

Harvey Kubernik, who (along with his brother) wrote the definitive book on The Monterey Pop Festival, tell us:
Kent -
I just talked to session great Don Peake and he mentioned he played electric sitar on Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" that Lou Adler and John Phillips did.

re: GOOD OLD-FASHIONED FORGOTTEN HITS:
Loved Gary's picks from 2007 ... wasn't it just great to listen to those?? Can't wait to see what you feature tomorrow!

What a slam-bang selection of hits! Lots of stuff I enjoyed!
And kudos to Randy Price for his new chart pages! As a one-time weekly reader of Billboard (late 70s), I LOVE the classic design!

>>>Did Crabby Appleton's 1970 hit "Go Back" receive much airplay in Chicagoland? Someone mentioned it today, and it's a true forgotten hit for most people. (David Lewis)
>>>Yes, quite a bit ... in fact, we still hear it here from time to time. We featured this one a long time ago ... always liked this song. (#12 in Chi-Town ... #30 nationally) kkHello Kent.
Dang, I never heard this one before. I don't see it on KHJ's top 30. It's pretty good.
Suzanne

Hey Kent -
I really liked this Sunday's installment. So many of the songs you posted had the same effect that the Forgotten Hit of the Day had. I had forgotten that I knew these songs and the lyrics just jumped out.
I, too, am a huge Gino Vannelli fan. I wasn't aware of him until the late 70's. I own his Brother to Brother, Storm at Sunup and Nightwalker albums and a greatest hits CD.
He played a big part in a romance in my life in the early eighties. He was kind of a hairy dude ... but the man sure could sing.
On the CBS Sunday Morning show with Charles Osgood this morning, one of the stories was about singer Rufus Wainwright. I have to admit I hadn't heard of him before. The story said he has been doing this for over ten years. Anyway, I think he is amazing ... an incredible talent.
After the Sunday Morning show is over I turn on the radio. The River 106.7 runs old Casey Kasem shows and I catch the rest of the top 40 count down from what ever year gone by. The interesting thing is when they talk about how this artist
holds this record for sales or songs at number 1 for a record setting number of weeks, etc., and of course now all of those things have been surpassed in one way or another ... it's almost feels like time travel.
Stacee
I like listening to some of these old vintage countdowns because somehow, in my head, I always associate certain songs with certain OTHER songs ... most likely because they were played on the radio at the same time. Once they get to the Top 20, I try to see how many of the Top Five or Top Ten songs I can predict, just based on some of the other tunes featured in the lower rankings of the countdown. I've actually gotten pretty good at it!
I think it's fun to hear how this music was presented THEN ... the statistics of that time were incredibly accurate and timely ... amazing to think how many of these records have been broken since, now that hit records typically stay on the charts for over a year! (kk)

Hey Kent-
Just a minor correction to your mention of the New Colony Six 45 titled, "Roll On" in yesterday's Forgotten Hits ...
You mentioned that the Sunlight label which the NC6 single "Roll On" was released on, was the groups own label ...
It was NOT their own label ... The Sunlight label was actually owned by Pete Wright, a well-known Chicago area record label owner, producer (Pete actually managed and produced The New Colony Six), record distributor and night club owner.
The Sunlight label actually boasted a noteworthy roster of 45 releases by Ral Donner, Former Chicago-area D.J. Eric Stevens, Chuck & Mary Perrin, and numerous others. Sunlight Records was actually the sister label to Pete Wright's Twinight label, which was primarily his label for releasing his Soul singles by Syl Johnson and various other black artists. I have every single ever released on both of these two labels.
Just wanted to set the record straight.
Glad you're back up and running!
Jerry Schollenberger
New Colony Six Group historian
Thanks, Jerry. That piece dates back to 2007 and was submitted by FH Reader Gary Theroux ... I was thrilled to see in his original series that he picked both "Roll On" by The New Colony Six AND "Sugar And Spice" by The Cryan' Shames ... two of Chicago's local heroes from the '60's.
The New Colony Six's own record label, of course, was Centaur (later Sentar), funded by the parents of some of the guys in the original line-up of the band (and later run by Ray Graffia, Jr.'s father until the band signed with Mercury Records in 1968 and their biggest hits followed.) kk

Man, what a tasty selection of tracks you served up this weekend. Every one of these songs brought back special memories of days past. FH has returned and is flying high. Thank you, Kent!
David Lewis
Thanks, David. Now that we're back up and running, one of the things I'm hoping to do on a more regular basis is remember our original purpose more often ... we may even revamp the website yet again to better accommodate things like "Breaking News" and "Today's Forgotten Hits" features. That way, when we're in the middle of a series we can still promote some of the OTHER things that Forgotten Hits is all about! Meanwhile, hopefully a few of the jocks on the list will follow our cue and play a few of these tracks on their programs this week. (kk)
